Have you been interested in making your own cheese but not sure where to start? Well, this is the post for you! We have laid out some of the most important features to think about when it comes to buying a cheesemaking kit for your DIY adventure. Whether you are interested in the classic American cheese, Farmhouse cheddar, or a quick and easy cheese such as Ricotta; this Blog will cover the highlights of each kit and different things that may interest you in trying them.
We want to stress that all our kits have been designed to be able to be made by beginners! There is no previous skill needed to make cheese, just a bit of patience and willingness to try.
To start with our Mozza & Ricotta Cheesemaking Kit. This is one of our most popular kits sold online, we contribute this largely to the impressive batch amount you get in each kit. Each kit comes with 40 batches of cheese! This means you can make homemade mozzarella cheese 40 different times before you need to refill it.
If you choose to make the Mozzarella cheese, it will take you approximately one hour, 40 minutes of this is spent cooking and stretching the cheese and 20 minutes is spent waiting for the milk. If you opt for the ricotta cheese it takes you 30 minutes of work with one to three hours of waiting for the cheese to become the perfect level of dryness. Overall both of these cheeses take very little time but stretching the Mozza can take some practice to get it right! There is trial and error but once you get it, you will be a cheese-wise!
A reason why many people get this kit is the hands-on activity and short time frame. Pizza lovers obsess over the fact they can make fresh mozzarella to put on their pizza, especially if they use the leftover whey in the pizza dough. Families who like to do activities together also enjoy this kit as it can teach young children about where their food comes from and the science behind cheesemaking.
Our Feta and Goat Cheesemaking Kits are a hit with people who enjoy saltier cheese and do not spend time in the kitchen. This kit is one of our more ‘full-proof’ DIY cheesemaking kits as it is more forgiving of mistakes. This kit makes a total of ten batches of cheese, you can choose how many are feta or goat!
This kit takes two to four hours of hands-on time, and after one to two days you will have a pound of feta or goat cheese to enjoy. As we mentioned this is one of the easiest cheeses to make and if you don’t mind the wait it is perfect!
Many people love this kit because of its ability to make traditional feta cheese! It is amazing for greek salads, in wraps, and on eggs in the morning. If you are someone who always wants cheese on hand it is a great fit. Other customers love the goat cheese aspect of the kit and their ability to infuse the goat cheese log with any flavour they want. We have seen some amazing cranberry, dill, and lemon cheese from our customers!
Our vegan kit is the newest addition but the recipes have remained tried and true! It is a huge hit at in-person shows and makes a great gift for loved-one who live a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle. This is one of our lowest-priced kits at $45 and comes with eight batches of vegan cheese.
This kit is hands down one of the easiest cheeses to make! It only takes three to five minutes of hand-one time and then three to four hours and patience while your cheese rests in the refrigerator. Fast, easy, and delicious
There are many highlights to this vegan cheese kit but one of our favourite is how creative you can get with it! Not only can you add your own flavours and spices (a tablespoon of pesto is my favourite!), but you can also use any seed or nut you’d like. The kits originally comes with cashews but you can experiment with other types of nuts or seeds like almonds, macadamia, sunflower and sesame.
There are many different types of customers who enjoy our farmhouse cheddar kit. We have had retired part-time barbecuers who want to try their hand at smoking their cheddar; and adventurous new students who want to add some jalapenos to put some more of a kick into their cheese. There is really no one-size-fits-all when it comes to lovers of this kit… and with 10 batches, we can’t blame them!
This kit has the longest overall make time, but don’t worry it does not mean it is difficult! As with all of our kits, it has detailed instructions that help walk you through every step in the process. After two to four hours of hands-on work and then two to three days of waiting you will have a delicious 1 pound (per batch) wheel of cheddar cheese! If you want to test your patience you can age it for up to a year to get old cheddar cheese.
The big draw for many people is the simplicity or complexity, you can use when flavouring and aging your cheese. As cheddar cheese is one of the most popular cheeses in North America it is no wonder why so many individuals enjoy this kit. They can embrace creativity and try their hand at aging it for different lengths of time to get a different flavour profile. We tend to see many men, in particular, enjoying this cheese ki, especially if they are big cheese fans, to begin with!
Our poutine kit, or cheese curd kit, is a huge kit for families and Canadians! Kids love the squeaky cheese and with 8 batches they can enjoy it again and again. We also see many Canadians gifting this cheese kit to their friends and family from other areas as a fun memory of the staple Canadian dish.
This kit only takes 2-3 hours to make and then you can eat your squeaky cheese curds with only two to five hours of patience. There is no special skill you need to learn how to make squeaky curds and once you try it you will learn the perfect dryness of your curd to get your own perfect squeak.
We haven’t mentioned it yet but this kit even comes with GRAVY! This means it has everything you need to make poutine at home, all you have to get is the milk and fries. It makes a perfect hands-on meal for kids and allows individuals to loud up their Canadian delicacy with lots of cheese.
